Q. How do I define a test server to preview my website?

A. There are actually two methods of testing your website.

The first and most straightforward is to simply upload it to your actual web domain. If you are working on a new site and have an "Under Construction" page already configured, you can upload everything in the background.

  1. Save your Home page as something different like "tobehomepage.html" so that it does not over-write your Under Construction page. (Note: if your Home page is dynamic like index.asp, you do not need to change the name since the web server automatically defaults to the index.html page first.)
  2. Upload all files you want to test.
  3. In your web browser, type in the exact location of your file.
  4. Once you are ready to "go live" simply erase the current index.html page, change "tobehomepage.html" to "index.html" (in Dreamweaver), and when prompted, click yes to update all links.

If this is not a practical solution for you, you can also define a test server within Dreamweaver. For more information on this, check out the Adobe designer tutorial:
